having barcoded library codes. We use CASPR which
is Code 39 format. When we order barcode numbers
for our cards, don't you need to know the format?

What is a barcode symbology?
A barcode symbology is the particular system of encoding data (system of bars and spaces between the bars) so that a barcode reader (scanner) can read and decode the data encoded in the barcode. Code39 is the default barcode symbology we use - unless another one is specified. However you do need to find out if CASPR requires a checksum digit or if they have requirements that the barcode be a certain number of digits long.
